Our homes are our havens for ourselves and our family. It is the place we can come to at the end of a long day to relax and unwind. It is a place where memories are made and traditions are continued. Our home is where we feel the most comfortable and where our hearts long to be. Because our homes are such an important part of our daily lives, they should be filled with things we love and items that are full of memories.

We shared the art of styling in a previous post and talked about the importance of accessories. Accessories are a lovely way to make your home feel personal and tell a story about your family. An effective way to display your beloved accessories is with shelving. Whether it's a built-in shelving unit or an armoire, these pieces can be the perfect place to start to make your house feel like home.

We've pulled together some stylish shelving to help get you inspired and motivated to work on making your shelving both functional and fabulous.

If you have an empty wall or an awkward corner of a room, a stand alone armoire can be a nice way to fill the space. Fill it with your favorite things like books, candlesticks and beautiful serving pieces.

You may have a shelving unit that you want to be both functional and a way to display beautiful accessories. Accomplishing both is possible. Use part of the piece as a place to store towels or extra blankets and pillows. Fill in the rest of the shelving with accessories that match the color scheme of the linens on display.

Built-in shelving is another practical way to display personal mementos or family treasures. Consider painting the back of your shelves a color other than white. Your accessories tend to pop and stand out more contrasted with a color other than your basic builder grade white.

Another option to make your accessories stand out is to paint the shelves themselves and trim a darker color. The dark brown on these shelves definitely makes a dramatic statement and really draws the eye to the items on display.

Keep in mind with shelving though that you don't have to fill every square inch of space. Using only a few sparse items on your shelving can still make a big impact. And, using only a few items prevents items that have less meaning and are more fillers from appearing on your shelving.

Open shelving in kitchens or a large hutch or china cabinet are appropriate for storage but also to showcase some of your beautiful dinnerware items. When displaying your dinnerware or serving pieces, be sure to use similar style items on display with a cohesive color palette.

Creating a focal point with a hutch or cabinet is another effective way to use space and furnishings. Flank the hutch with beautiful artwork and display your most prized and glamorous accessories.
