Design Trends That Are Here to Stay

The latest trends are something many of us tend to strive for. We want to be 'in' and current. Whether it's the latest trend in fashion or technology, we want to incorporate the latest and greatest into our lives.

But, trends aren't always a good thing. When it comes to design, for example, incorporating a trend in your home could mean regret down the road. As time moves on and trends go out of style, you could be left with outdated furniture, countertops, tile or cabinets, all of which aren't cheap to replace.

You have to be careful what design trends you decide to incorporate, as some will not stand the test of time. Here are some interior design trends that we think are here to stay and will remain classic and appreciated.

Gallery Walls

Creating gallery walls in your home is something that is hugely popular right now. If you do a Google search, you will be presented with endless pages of tips for how to create them along with inspirational images. But gallery walls are the perfect opportunity for creating visual interest. They allow you to incorporate personal mementos, photographs and details tailored to your personal style. They are also a great way to fill an awkward or unique wall size that might otherwise be hard to accessorize.

Mid-Century Modern Architecture and Furniture

The popularity of mid-century modern furniture and architecture has returned and is here to stay. The birth of this design style came from the tough economic times in the 1950s. Due to lack of resources, innovative, simple, and clean designs were created. These designs are timeless, which is why they are popular today. Mix mid-century modern elements with various other design styles for an overall clean, sophisticated look.

The Non-Traditional Kitchen

Creating a unique kitchen space isn't a new trend, but designing a kitchen that doesn't look 'kitchen-y' is. This non-traditional kitchen look is achieved through eliminating or disguising the hallmark details typical in kitchens. Utilizing open shelving, for example, and foregoing bulky upper cabinets provides a more open-air quality and allows the kitchen to blend-in with the rest of the home. Another example is eliminating your typical built-in island and instead using a free standing table or bar cart for additional storage and workspace.

Neutral Color Palettes

We continue to talk about it, but neutral color schemes and palettes are here to stay. Using mostly neutral colors allows maximum flexibility when it comes to layering textures and incorporating pops of color. Neutrals also tend to make a room feel fresh, clean, and brighter, which is always a good thing.

Unconventional Application of Interior Paint

Traditionally, walls and trim are painted different colors; occasionally, an accent color is chosen for the walls themselves. But using interior paint in unconventional ways is a relatively new trend that we think will stick around. For example, painting the trim and walls the same color allows the room to feel bigger and often times brighter. Also, painting the ceiling or trim an accent color instead of the usual can create a beautifully compelling space.

Juxtaposed Elements

Mixing various elements and design styles in one's home has become very popular. Pairing old pieces with new, traditional with contemporary or just mixing multiple prints and fabrics creates a more interesting space. When done right, mixing opposite styles or finishes can actually result in a beautiful look and is a trend that is worth continuing.
